Can anyone ever top Prince Charles' wedding to Diana in 1981?

Many celeb weddings have extravagant gowns and star-studded guest lists, but most fall short when compared to the royal spectacle of PRINCE CHARLES' nuptials to LADY DIANA SPENCER on July 29th, 1981. More than 750 million people around the world tuned in to watch the 20-year-old English schoolteacher ride Cinderella-like through London's streets in a glass coach. The Princess of Wales wore a poofy wedding gown made from 40 yards of ivory English silk with a 25-foot-long train, and the 2,500 guests at St. Paul's Cathedral tittered as she fumbled over her husband-to-be's name, calling him "Philip Charles Arthur George" instead of CHARLES PHILIP ARTHUR GEORGE. But the crowds outside went wild when they kissed on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

The one-stop bridal Web site, Brides.com, names Charles and Diana among their list of top 10 weddings of all time, along with GRACE KELLY and PRINCE RAINIER of Monaco, JOHN F. KENNEDY JR. and CAROLYN BESSETTE, ELVIS and PRISCILLA PRESLEY, JENNIFER LOPEZ and MARC ANTHONY, MADONNA and GUY RITCHIE, and several more. But tonight, "The Insider" is counting down the most elaborate nuptials of 2006!

First up is the union of "Tomkat," aka TOM CRUISE & KATIE HOLMES. The most anticipated wedding of the year took place at Castello Odescalchi in the village of Bracciano, Italy, just after sunset on Saturday, Nov. 18th. Katie Holmes wore a fitted ARMANI off-the-shoulder bridal gown with a train in ivory silk caddis adorned in VALENCIENNES lace and SWAROVSKI-beaded crystal embroidery, featuring a delicate crinoline frill at the shoulders and a silk soleil border around the hem. The official wedding party included Cruise's children, ISABELLA and CONNOR. The best man was Cruise's best friend, DAVID MISCAVIGE, and the matron of honor was Holmes' sister, NANCY BLAYLOCK. Holmes' and Cruise's wedding rings were made by CARTIER and are white gold with diamonds. Celebrity guests attending the wedding of the year included BROOKE SHIELDS, JENNIFER LOPEZ and hubby MARC ANTHONY, DAVID and VICTORIA BECKHAM, WILL SMITH and wife JADA PINKETT SMITH, JIM CARREY and girlfriend JENNY McCARTHY, CATHERINE BELL and JENNA ELFMAN.

NICOLE KIDMAN & KEITH URBAN: Not to be outdone, Tom's ex had her own fairy-tale ceremony when she married the country music star on June 25th in Sydney, Australia. The bride looked like a princess in a long, traditional veil and a romantic, ivory BALENCIAGA dress with an empire waist and exquisite pearl drop earrings. Her hair was long and curly, and she carried white roses in her hand. To match, Keith also tucked a white rose into the lapel of his black suit. The star-studded ceremony took place at Cardinal Cerretti Memorial Chapel on the St. Patrick Estate, with Nicole's father, ANTONY KIDMAN, reportedly walking her down the aisle. Nicole's sister, ANTONIA KIDMAN, was the matron of honor; Keith's brother SHANE was the best man. Father PAUL COLEMAN, an old friend of Nicole's and her family's, conducted the service. Many friends and family attended the intimate event, including Nicole's two children, 13-year-old Isabella and 11-year-old Connor -- whom she shares with former spouse Tom Cruise -- and fellow Aussies HUGH JACKMAN, NAOMI WATTS and media mogul RUPERT MURDOCH.

TORI SPELLING & DEAN McDERMOTT" The couple's May 7th wedding was an intimate affair, attended only by Tori and Dean; the love-smitten couple reportedly couldn't wait to get married and skipped traditional formalities. Instead, they opted for a non-denominational ceremony on a private island in Fiji. Both bride and groom went barefoot and wore white. The blonde heiress became engaged to Dean in December 2005. The couple met earlier that year while working together on the TV movie "Mind Over Murder," and had been dating for several months. They are now expecting their first child.
