How
are diamonds formed Comparing the properties of diamonds and graphite provides clues as to where
diamonds originate. Graphite forms close to the surface of the earth. The fact
that diamond’s crystalline structure is more compact than that of graphite
implies that they form in deeper environments where pressure and temperature is
higher. read more about Diamonds

Cosmologically Speaking, Diamonds May Actually Be Forever
If you’ve ever wondered about the ultimate fate of the

A post-doctoral fellow at McGill University has discovered that diamond
birth may well be forever, but their origins are not necessarily as
clear-cut as commonly believed.

At the headquarters of the Gemological Institute of America, 300 diamond
graders peer into microscopes and ponder gems lined up on light tables. They
work behind man-trap doors - where one door must close completely before another
opens. Security guards scan the floor from nearby stations.

Lux.
Lux is a chemical engineer whose company, the Gemesis Corp., turns out
thousands of gem-quality yellow diamonds every month from a factory in Florida,
US. Gem snobs may never go for them. But they’re not fakes—no cheap cubic
zirconias, no moissanites these. Lux is a 21st century alchemist who is turning
pure carbon into real diamonds, squeezing it into sturdy carbon crystals under
intense heat and pressure inside his machines.
'Lab
Diamonds' Offer Alternative To Mined Diamonds
Jim
Benemann Reporting found Feb 9, 2007 9:55 pm US/Mountain at cbs4denver.com
(CBS4) DENVER The movie "Blood Diamond" has forced
international attention on the conflict and oppression associated with mined
diamonds.
People who want a conflict free diamond have a stunning new alternative, and
it's even a bargain.
The movie profiles the dangerous business of "blood diamonds" in
Africa, and that's made a lot of people think twice about their next piece of
jewelry.
To be absolutely positive a diamond has no connections to conflict, it has to
come from a laboratory.
Fifth Avenue Designs is the first retailer in Colorado to carry lab diamonds,
but only after owner Larry Blauweiss gave the gemstones a second look.
"My first impression was oh, oh here we go with another copy of a
diamond, until I looked at them," Blauweiss said.
The diamonds have the same chemical and physical properties of a natural mined
stone.
"That's the beauty there really is no difference," Blauweiss said.
To create them in a lab, Apollo
Diamond takes slivers of diamond crystal and exposes them to intense heat,
pressure and carbon. Another company, Gemesis,
grows these hard-to-find diamonds with intense color.
Amy Scalercio's husband surprised her with a ring designed around a stunning
lab diamond. .
"When you put it on you still feel the butterflies that you felt the
first day," she said.
Scalercio told CBS4 she's never had anyone ask if it is a naturally mined or a
real diamond.
For some people, the greatest appeal of lab diamonds may be the price tag.
Laboratory diamonds cost just a third that of a mined stone the same size.
