USA: Diamond Imports from Africa at $1.5B in '05

(Rapaport...July 19, 2006) Trade between the continent of Africa and the United State grew 37 percent in 2005 to $61 billion with imports to the United States accounting for the bulk at $50.3 billion.
Diamonds accounted for $1.5 billion of the imports and oil accounted for more than $40 billion, according to the International Monetary Fund
(IMF.)
More than 82 percent of sub-Sahara exports to the United States came from four countries which were Nigeria (48 percent - mostly oil,) Angola (17 percent,) and South Africa (12 percent.)
The following list shows major diamond supplier countries to the United States from Africa. The Commerce Department total ($1.115 billion) for 2005 is lower than the IMF and does not reflect fluctuations in currency:
